December Highlight: Eniola Shokunbi, innovator and activist

Twiana Armstrong

Eniola is a Connecticut middle schooler who is passionate about science and keeping her fellow students healthy!

  • The Connecticut state bond committee recently approved 11.5 million dollars for the creation and installation of air filters in local schools, and Eniola was one of the leaders of the project!

  • She met with important leaders like state congressmen, the Governor and Lieutenant Governor, and scientists at UConn and the EPA in order to make this happen.

  • Eniola and her classmates at the STEM academy they attend helped to build the filters. Called a Corsi-Rosenthal filter, it is made up of four furnace filters, duct tape, and a box fan. It only costs around $60!

  • Despite the easily accessible materials and cheap cost, the filters are very effective, shown to remove 99% of viruses in the air. People have also used them to lessen the effects of wildfire smoke in homes and classrooms.

  • Eniola says her next goal is to become president!
